Max Verstappen has secured pole position for the second weekend in a row, and he will be joined at the front of the grid by Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris. It would have been Valtteri Bottas in second, but for the three-place grid penalty he received for spinning out in the pit lane during the free practice session.
The final part of qualification is now underway, with the drivers all seeking to secure pole position ahead of tomorrow’s race.
Gasly ended up not improving on his time, which saw him drop to third as Sergio Perez (1:04.1) came first and Lando Norris finished in second. Verstappen was in fourth, Bottas in fifth and Hamilton in sixth. In the elimination zone, Russell, Sainz, Ricciardo, Vettel and Giovinazzi have dropped out ahead of Q3.
Pierre Gasly has shot around Red Bull Ring with a time of 1:04.429, which puts him out in front, ahead of Verstappen, whose quickest lap is 0.004 seconds behind. Bottas, Norris and Perez are in third, fourth and fifth respectively. Leclerc, Vettel, Russell, Ricciardo and Giovanazzi are in the elimination zone at present.
Verstappen has recorded the fastest time with 1:04.540, with Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez having recorded the second quickest time, as he is 0.043 seconds behind. Bottas, Russell and Hamilton round out the top five of fastest laps.
There has been plenty of change, aside from the top three of Verstappen, Bottas and Norris, with Yuki Tsunoda and Perez rising up to fourth and fifth fastest. Hamilton, Leclerc and Gasly are then sixth, seventh and eighth respectively. Nicholas Latifi, Esteban Ocon, Kimi Raikkonen, Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin all end Q1 in the elimination zone.
Verstappen remains the fastest around Red Bull Ring, with Bottas, Norris, Hamilton and Charles Leclerc also in the top five. Leclerc has usurped Gasly, who drops to sixth.
Verstappen has currently recorded the fastest time around the track with a time of 1:04.489, with Bottas, Lando Norris, Hamilton and Pierre Gasly currently rounding out the top five. Verstappen’s teammate, Sergio Perez, is down in 11th, 0.788 seconds off the Dutchman.
The cars are preparing to come out onto the Red Bull Ring track and test the track, with the Verstappen-Hamilton battle set to continue for another weekend.
