The author’s straightforward, conversational writing is a pleasure, but it’s her ability to help women interpret their circumstances in a more adventurous, intuitive way that makes this book unique. The condition of the main-character, a girl named Kendell Fletcher, is confirmed to be OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), which has good and bad points. A confirmed condition makes the story seem real and helps the readers to develop an understanding; however, with mental health conditions, everyone is affected differently. Even two people, born and raised in the same conditions, with the same diagnosis, will not demonstrate the same behaviour. Although written in third person, you can really empathise with Kendell and see her everyday struggles. However, there is not really an in-depth view on the discrimination others with OCD sometimes face and I think this is a disappointment about the book. There is an element of heroineism to Kendell and her having OCD is spun in a positive light at the end: it being what saved her life. I would recommend this book to newly-diagnosed OCDs, and teenagers who have little knowledge on the condition, but I would not use it as a reference for the condition.
