The new Disney film “Encanto” tells the story of an Indigenous Zenu family in Colombia. The US corporation has often been accused of cultural appropriation in the past. What’s behind it?
‘Encanto’ is already in theaters and hits Disney+ on December 24
The new Disney animation “Encanto” offers a magical adventure of an extended Indigenous family. The Madrigals live in an enchanted city in the mountains of Colombia. With the exception of one child, every family member has a unique magical power.
“When Disney comes to Colombia (‘Encanto’) or Scandinavia (‘Frozen’) or Hawaii and the Pacific (‘Moana,’ ‘Lilo and Stitch’) and decontextualises and dismantles the local Indigenous cultures, they are cherry-picking,” she adds. “They come, do the autopsy and pull out the organ they need, transplant it to their Frankenstein version of us and then feed it to the audience with these cute little child characters. That’s the process, it’s an industrialized erasure of Indigenous and marginalized peoples and cultures.”
“My participation in the Disney movie ‘Encanto’ was providing information about the work that is done with the cane fiber, the history of the vueltiao hat in our Zenu community, and accessories made from cana flecha [a local palm fiber]. Years of work have given us recognition as master craftspeople representing the culture of the vueltiao hat,” says local craftsman Reinel Mendoza.
An important clue, Mirabel is told, lies in her trying to get along with the obnoxious Isa. But why would that solve anything? Their spiky and rousing duet, “What Else Can I Do?,” gives us a rapturous hint. That’s one of eight original songs Miranda wrote for the film, all of them good, several of them gems, like the strong-woman Luisa ripping through the exhilaratingly knotty wordplay of “Surface Pressure” or the ensemble number “We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” which has a riff catchy enough to rival Camila Cabello’s “Havana.” The whole movie has a mercurial, mood-hopping free-form vibe that, at its best, suggests Disney with a touch of “Yellow Submarine.” When Isa begins to see the light, instead of beautiful flowers she produces a cactus. Prickly, but at least it’s her. That’s the kind of movie “Encanto” is. Is there a villain? For a while, it sure seems like it. But it turns out that the most dastardly thing in this canny and touching fairy tale is to ignore the love under our noses.
As it stands, “Encanto” should bring in $40 million over the five-day holiday (much less than other, pre-pandemic Disney animated offerings such as “Frozen 2” and “Ralph Breaks The Internet” have managed over the same period). That will likely leave “House of Gucci” with an impressive $20 million-plus Thanksgiving week haul and Sony’s “Resident Evil” reimagining with a $12 million gross. “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” should snag second place with $35 million or so over the five-day spread.
