Directed by Jared Bush, Byron Howard and Charise Castro Smith, Disney’s Encanto is a magical story about family and courage indeed. The animated musical fantasy comedy tells the story of Mirabel, a young girl from the Madrigal family who is endowed with superhuman powers. Since Mirabel is the only one without powers, she is often ignored by her family. In a time of danger, however, it is precisely this girl who brings the family together to save their magical family home, Casita, from destruction.
Onward is directed by Dan Scanlon and the cast includes prominent names such as Tom Holland, Chris Pratt, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Octavia Spencer. Similar to Encanto, where Mirabel misses her late grandfather Pedro, this film is about coping with the loss of a loved one and finding the strength that grows from memories and love.
She is accompanied by the funny dragon Mushu, the family guardian sent by the ancestors. Encanto and Mulan are very similar in that both Mirabel and Mulan are not taken seriously by their families until they show their courage to save their loved ones from danger. They also draw strength from the blessings of their ancestors, which contain a touch of magic. Another thing they have in common is the soulful original soundtrack and the lively depiction of ethnicity.
