When Agari Himiko, the shy school librarian who is afraid of being looked at, is stared at by Komi, who can’t communicate that she just wants to be friends, she jumps to the wrong conclusion and believes she either offended Komi in some way or is simply being messed with by the popular beauty for sport.

I am also not very overly fond of the side-characters that make up the cast of classmates. The manga makes a point of explaining that Tadano and Komi’s school is filled with various weirdos, which leads to some strange jokes. Najimi Osana is introduced as a pathological liar of undeterminable gender, but after two jokes about his/her gender, this whole aspect of Osana’s character is dropped in favor of focusing on her ability to befriend almost anybody and maintain countless friendships with ease. Similarly, Himiko Agari is introduced as a girl that can’t deal with social interaction either, but instead of befriending Komi she settles on becoming her loyal dog.

This leads to odd scenes with erotic overtones, like Agari striking a pose very similar to a certain hentai fetish thinking Komi was about to photograph her or Osana remarking that Tadano’s determination is making him/her moist. The internet keeps insisting not to “lewd” Komi and I agree that it’s not a story where fan-service fits comfortably into the presentation. It’s just that Tomihito Oda appears to be on a different page in that regard.
