I really enjoy the adaptations of this, each of them have their own spin of each story. But most, the casting and or acting totally flops. I only watched clips and of course, the latest adaptation “Meteor Garden” looks great! Other adaptations may be debatable. The series itself is like a fairytale, there’s different versions depending on the country and who is telling it. However, my most favourite is indefinitely the Korean version as it became a massive hit and further boost the series. Each adaptations have their own charms. And hair is certainly not one of them.
I’ve talked about this for years and had many false starts but the tiny house is at my doorstep. Not the one I live in but the one I will build and place on a small plot of land with a micro garden and a wood fired Jacuzzi. I’ve always known that at some point I would start another banging business. The reason I have yet to is that I don’t want to work more than 10 hours a week and I’m getting close to that dream, I can feel it in my bones. Having built an empire on just that, I know it can be done, this time I’ll do it better. My needs are very simple. I want to live a life of trust, to know my partner has my back. To live a life free of pollution. To love the earth that feeds me and tread lightly on it. To not only live organically but to be a part of the preservation of the earth rather than the destruction of it.
With the financial markets on the edge of a cliff and ready for free fall, my dream of building a tiny home on a small piece of dirt just large enough for a garden and a small shed for my new Harley is closer than its ever been. When the markets tank l, real estate in the islands falls furthest and fastest. What ever I find it will be close to free and as usual I’ll pay cash as not to become a slave to things I’ve not yet earned.
The bike that almost killed me would turn out to be my savior as I pushed from a one mile struggle up to hours of spinning down quiet island roads. The Box that I started out loathing became my safe place and I fell in love with that tiny little square space. Through all this my dreams never changed but I was changing more and more every day. Having been robbed of the divide Im incredibly driven to spend more time on the bike. The countless hours in the saddle were spent trying to figure out how to get everything done on Sookie and she needs a lot. The best journey is yet to come, but will but would it be on the bike or the boat. All the while I was setting deep roots on dry land, I’ve been more or less living aboard for the last 13 years and gardens, flush toilets and lights that never need to be charged were becoming all to familiar. The lure of the easy life had taken me.
He went as far as skipping school on a regular basis to do introverted activities in his room, like reading novels, literature, and other book types and the only time he went outside is to go to a botanical garden as revealed in episode 7 to be in peace in case he and his mother were to argue.
Zatch Bell and Kiyo Takamine also have a close and somewhat brotherly relationship, which helps them to unlock his immense power, and despite initially being judged as one of the weakest mamodo in the contest, Zatch has defeated many opponents with Kiyo’s help. They are determined to win the battle to decide the Mamodo King, then Zatch can end the recurring war between mamodo.
Going back to the inconsistent power levels for a second, it can be a little jarring. Lina is able to go up against one of the four legendary priests in one scene and then she’s having trouble with your garden variety monsters in the next one. It appears like Lina just likes to troll her allies sometimes, but it goes a little far. We know that she’s immensely powerful and she somehow seems to know just about every spell so they may as well play it straight. There are quite a few third wall breaking moments to also make sure that the show doesn’t get too serious. It’s pretty interesting since the show is very direct on this approach. Gourry also suffers from this since he is usually an expert swordsman, as seen when he faces his rival, but he can also be pretty helpless at other times. For better or worse, it’s just the kind of show that Slayers is I guess. Every show has its weakness so having a minor one like this isn’t bad.
Kiyo Takamine is a 14 year old genius, which makes him a target for being teased and harassed by the other students. As a result, Kiyo tends to be apathetic to most people and skips school on a regular basis. However, everything changes when he a young boy named Zatch shows up on his doorstep with a strange book saying that Kiyo’s father had sent him to live with Kiyo. As Kiyo tries to make sense of this and interpret the strange book, he reads out loud a spell that causes Zatch to fire a lightning bolt from his mouth.
Kiyo and Zatch eventually learn that Zatch is actually from the Momodo world, where 100 Momodo children every 1000 years are sent to Earth to fight with human allies to become the Momodo King. The object of each fight is to burn the book of the other Momodo. The last Momodo left with their book unburned will rule be the Momodo King. Zatch Bell has the strongest similarity to Shaman King in terms of the rules for the fighting. Not only is the fight held twice as long as every Shaman King fight, but the winner gets to be the King. Not to mention that one of the rules for losing for both tournaments is if the key item being used is destroyed. More importantly, however, Shaman King and Zatch Bell share the importance of friendship. Both Kiyo and Yoh begin the series as loners who don’t have any friends because of their huge burden.
However, a chance encounter with someone ends up leading them to their very first friendship, and that new friend in turn helps lead to more friendships being formed. If you liked how Yoh made friends with the other shamans in the shaman fight, then you will also be a fan of how Kiyo makes friends with other people participating to help their Momodo ally become, the Momodo King.
It should not be a surprise that one of the most similar works to Shinkai’s best film is another one he directs. However, what connects ‘5 Centimeters Per Second’ and ‘The Garden of Words’, two films with stories that are not only different in tone, pacing and even the most fundamental emotion that it instills upon its viewer, is a very specific aesthetic-style that no other director has been able to pull off. What Shinkai brings to the table is the ability to construct, through jaw-droppingly beautiful visuals and an absolute mastery of audio cues, a perfect representation of the real world in anime.
The Garden of Words takes place in modern day Tokyo and tells the story between a teenage high school student and an adult young woman. What connects the two is neither a platonic friendship nor an intense romance, but rather the simple joy and comfort of being in each other’s presence where they can escape reality and truly be themselves. They sit together, speaking only when they feel so inclined and pay no heed to each other’s presence when occupied, accompanied only by the unobtrusive sound of rain.
To such a transparent story of pure, honest feelings of love between strangers, Shinkai shows his proficiency the most in the background of the world that we see his characters wander in. The stations of Tokyo are full of ambient sound that almost hurry people out of the trains as much as they hurry the trains away from the platform. The movement of trees and the rain is so effortless that it never catches the uncritical eye. The characters themselves are so well integrated into their plane of existence that there is never any doubt that they belonged there in the first place.
However, the Garden of Words is the film that exhibits Shinkai’s capacity as a storywriter the most, in which he proves that he is not a one-trick pony who can only obliterate the hearts of his audience, but can tell uplifting tales that inspire us to continue trusting in the goodness of one another.
