Vermeil in Gold doesn't break the mold, but having a strong female lead who owns her sexuality is refreshing.

Lilia’s familiar, Sylpheed, unleashes a powerful wind attack, but Vermeil effortlessly blocks it, then uses magic to make Lilia become so aroused that she forfeits. Alto orders Lilia to be friends with Vermeil. Later, Vermeil tells Alto that Lilia is in love with him, but he doesn’t believe her. She kisses and drains him again and after he asks why she needs to kiss him she says if she doesn’t drain mana from him she won’t be able to maintain her form, her long imprisonment having weakened her. She says sex would be an even more efficient way for her to drain his mana and asks if he wants to try it, but he panics and refuses, saying kissing is fine.

Alto could have taken advantage of the one command he got to use on Lilia, but simply commands her to become friends with Vermeil. Later, Vermeil teases Alto by saying that Lilia is obviously in love with him, but Alto denies this. Vermeil kisses Alto again in order to drain his mana and explains she needs to or else she will disappear. Vermeil then tries to seduce Alto again since sex would provide more mana, but he says that kissing will suffice.

It has been proven time and time again that Vermeil is a powerful demon. The twist is that she needs mana from Alto, which she can acquire by kissing or having sex with him. He agreed, but only to kiss.

I think the magical mystery ingredient in this particular case is Vermeil’s portrayal. When you boil the premise down to its basic elements, it sounds quite a bit like a sexy, powerful women getting “tamed” by someone unworthy but for some stupid plot contrivance making him secretly awesome. In practice, though, I think Vermeil’s existence – they way she carries herself and her playful, amused attitude – helps to emphasize the fact that she could pretty much leave any time, yet sticks around because of some personal entertainment value and the promise of that sweet, sweet magic juice. It’s absolutely not a “real” justification, and I’m sure you’ll recall what I’ve had to say about internal justifications for external criticisms, but an attempt was made and the show clearly doesn’t take itself too seriously, which helps a lot.
