After those brief introductions, we moved onto Captain Hague, the first regular fireman to be promoted into the Fire Force. Hague is obsessed with the Adolla Burst; he got his facial scar from a demon during an Adolla Link and is desperate to feel it again. Of course, he got his chance too. Being close to Hague caused Shinra to set off an Adolla Link, where he encountered ‘The First Pillar’. She possessed Shinra and caused him to get aggressive. This caused Hague to spring into action and knock Shinra through a window so we could begin the fight.

Throughout all of this, Shinra had been having an internal struggle. Eventually, Arthur took him down and told him to choose whether he’s a devil or a hero, with the threat of death if he chose incorrectly. That gave Shinra enough of a kick to knock himself down and tackle The First Pillar, demanding she leaves. She taunted him as she went, saying she wouldn’t confirm whether his Mum was still out there or not, and then mentioned that a new Pillar was about to arise. The episode ended with her questioning who would find them first, the Fire Force or the White Clad.

I really enjoyed this. Hague’s arm licking and The First Pillar’s nude form were essentially Fire Force being Fire Force, but the core of the episode was so well executed that they weren’t that distracting. We saw the effects of the Adolla Link, we had Shinra question himself, Arthur got to grow, and even the supporting cast had moments in the sun. This episode threw us straight back into the main story and did so with style, so this gets a big thumbs up.

A newcomer to the Fire Force, Shinra has a range of abilities that make him one of its strongest members. These include extremely durability and strength, an unbreakable will, and his pyrokinesis, the ability to wield fire as a weapon emitting from his feet. 

Also a first-year member of the Fire Force alongside Shinra, Arthur is a part of the Special Fire Force Company 8. Alongside some impressive combat attributes, Arthur’s biggest asset is his skill in Pyrokinesis that allows him to control plasma and ignite objects. This comes in extremely handy for users to create his plasma sword Excalibur.

A fan-favorite character, Tamaki is a former member of Special Fire Force Company 1 and a current member of Company 8 due to disciplinary action. Her prokinetic abilities are extremely powerful and allow her both fire-type offense and immunity to flames. Her ignition ability will see her don a coat of flames in a cat-like shape that increases her mobility greatly.

Captain of the Special Fire Force Company 5 it shouldn’t be a surprise that Hibana is quite powerful. Her pyrokinetic abilities manifest themselves with flower-shaped flames that can be used at a range to inflict substantial damage. Hibana can also manipulate the temperature which can be used to nullify some other ignition abilities. 

That’s the job of Special Fire Force Company 8, of which young newcomer and third-generation pyrokineticist Kusakabe Shinra is its newest member. He just happens to be a witness to the latest emergence of an Infernal, which Company 8 is dispatched to the train station to tackle.

In this way, Shinra gets a first-row view of how the Fire Force gets things done, and it’s as much a battle with a demon as it is a religous ritual; there’s even a sister, Iris, on staff to deliver the proper prayers at the proper time. While Shinra doesn’t participate in the battle, which is another success for Company 8, his quick thinking (and literally flaming feet) manage to rescue Iris from suffering a freak accident at the hands of a falling lamp.

From there, Shinra is taken back to Co.8’s HQ, a somewhat run-down but still very cool-looking cathedral (all of the architecture and mechanical design is very quirky and cool-looking, for that matter). He already met Iris by sweeping her off her feet like a princess, but soon meets Captain Oubi, Lt. Hinawa, and the first-class fire soldier Oze Maki.
