Attempting to visit the site won’t even show you the infamous sad panda that previously prevented unsavvy Internet users from accessing the site. The site’s closure sparked a rabid and passionate response from fans online who liken the loss to “the burning of the library in Alexandria.”

One of the sites, known as Sad Panda, or , is already gone. The other, e-hentai, is still online. Both hosted original artwork and English translations of Japanese art and comics—some that didn’t exist anywhere else—for more than 10 years.

Overnight, data hoarders and hentai enthusiasts scrambled to archive Sad Panda, with only a few hours’ notice.
